1. The city is home to about 216,656 people

2. The city is named after Robert Hobart, the British Secretary of State for War and the Colonies at the time of its settlement in 1804.

3. In terms of natural endowment, Tasmania might be the most naturally endowed Island in the world. It has 2000 km of walking tracks and 18 national parks. Most of the Island is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage which covers an area of 1.38 million acres. Hobart is part of this Heritage site.

4. Climate - Hobart averages about 626 mm or 24 inches rainfall, which makes it the second lowest among the Australian states capitals. It also averages 21°C (70°F) during summer and 12°C (52° F) during winter.

5. From Hobart’s port, the next stop is Antarctica. Tasmania is one of the most southerly habitable Islands and equals the size of West Virginia. It is located about 240 miles off the coast of Mainland Australia.

As bleak as Tasmania's past may seem, today it is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world. It boasts lush green vegetation, diverse wildlife, long coastline and enviable weather. If you ever find yourself in Australia, be sure to make a stop in Hobart - it is the cheapest destination of all the Australian tourism circuit destinations.
