Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and the Ancient Beech Forests of Germany

German’s Ancient Beech Forests are a classic example of post glacial biological and ecological evolution in Europe. The terrestrial ecosystems are indispensable in the search for knowledge of how the beech forests spread in the northern hemisphere in several climatically different environments.

The German Beech Forests are an inscription that has been added to the 29,278 hectares in Slovakia and Ukraine that had already been added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Previously. The German part includes 5 forests that occupy a land mass totaling 4391 hectares.

This tri-national beech forests have come to be known as the Primeval Beech Forests of Carpathians and the Ancient Beech Forests of Germany. The Ukraine and Slovakia parts of the forests had been added in the World Heritage Sites in 2007. The German part was an extension that was inscribed in 2011. The whole of the Primeval Beech Forests of Carpathians and the Ancient Beech Forests of Germany covers an area of 33,670 hectares and has been given a buffer zone of 62,403 hectares.

The property is home to a diverse flora and fauna. Apart from the Beech trees in the forests, you will also find Common Lady-Fern, The Deer Fern and the Hard Fern as well the Common Moon Wort. Other major flora species that can be found in the Beech forests include; the Wolf’s Bane, Mountain Tobacco, Mountain Arnica, and Lleopard’s Bane. The fauna species that are endemic to this ecosystem include the Boreal Owl, the Red Deer, European Roe Deer, Wolf, White Throated Dipper, and Hazel.

There is no better place to have an adventure (apart from maybe the German Alps) than in these forests. You will need to travel to the forests prepared for some jungle fun. Park your hiking boots and khaki pants, you insect repellant, raincoats (if travelling on summer) or warm woolen jackets (if travelling during winter). Do not forget to pack a camera and a compass/GPRS-enabled smartphone. A trip to the woods with the kids will make you a ‘super dad’ or ‘super mom’ for the rest of the year. Don’t you think it’s about time you try having fun outside the city?
