Things to do when on an adventure tour in the Great Blue Hole

The Great Blue Hole is the named used to refer to the submarine sinkhole that is located off the coast of Belize, near an atoll known as the Lighthouse Reef, which is 43 miles from the Belize City.

According to Wikipedia, the hole was formed through 'several episodes of quaternary glaciation when sea levels were much lower'. What this means is that the level of the sea as we know it today was a little bit lower, and the place where the whole is located was covered with glacier. As the glacier melted, it left a huge hole, which would later be filled up with sea water when the sea levels started to rise.

The hole is part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System as well as a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. At its deepest point, the hole measures 124 meters (407 ft.)

For those who love the outdoors, you will find out there is no better place in the world to dive than in this Belizean marvel. It is especially popular with divers who love getting up close to the dangerous se carnivore, the shark. The place has Caribbean Reef Shark, bull shark and hammerhead. Of course there are other types of marine life, but the shark is by far the most popular.

Another thing that makes the Great Blue Hole a popular tourist destination is the chance to dive and navigate the intricate cave system of the Belizean coast, which is part of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Although there are stories in the rumor mill that the hole is visible with naked eye from space, scientist have discounted this as just another 'UFO' like rumor that helps keep a place mystical.

When travelling to the Belize, you are advised to carry your own diving gear as the ones sold here are very expensive. You will also need a tour guide to show you around as well as a dive boat to take you to the diving spot. Although it can be a little expensive to dive in the Great Blue Hole, the experience is more than worth it.
